According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 7,787 recall campaigns have been issued for U.S. vehicles in this dataset, drawn from 2,054,142 consumer complaints on file as of June 2026. The rankings below surface where recall activity concentrates; see our methodology for how federal campaigns are counted.

Understanding Vehicle Recalls

A vehicle recall occurs when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle, equipment, car seat, or tire creates an unreasonable safety risk. Key points:

  • Recalls are free repairs - manufacturers must fix the issue at no cost to owners
  • A high recall count does not necessarily mean a vehicle is unsafe, it can reflect proactive safety monitoring
  • Brands with more models and higher sales volumes naturally have more recalls
  • Use NHTSA's recall lookup tool to check if your specific vehicle has open recalls
