New Car Assessment Program

The 2022VOLVOXC60 carries 101 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 3 crashes, 0 fires, 1 injury, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.

Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2022 XC60 is electrical system with 25 filings, followed by unknown or other (11) and forward collision avoidance: automatic emergency braking (6). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability. This model year has 6 active recall campaigns, which means the manufacturer is obligated to remedy the covered defect at no charge for the life of the vehicle — the full NHTSA campaign numbers are listed below.

NHTSA currently has 28 investigation files overlapping the 2022 XC60. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. Use the related-complaint feed below to read raw owner narratives before deciding whether any pattern here affects your specific use case.

20260105BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

Even after the Volvo R10320 - WAM Upgrade recall, the backup camera is STILL unavailable at times when reversing. The recall and software update did not fix the issue. I would start the car and begin to reverse and met with "Camera is temporarily unavailable". I do not know what else do to as Volvo is slow to respond or provide anytime of upgrade or timely fix. This has happened multiple times and almost five times a week.

20251117UNKNOWN OR OTHER

My car has been updated with software for a recall concerning the back up camera not operating when placed in reverse. This was an intermittent issue. The software has not fixed the problem as it continues to occur.

20251117UNKNOWN OR OTHER

My backup camera operates intermittently, even after a recall was performed updating some software.

20251025BACK OVER PREVENTION: WARNINGS

I purchased my 2022 Volvo XC60 in April 2025. I had no problems with the backup camera, until I installed a new version of software, 3.7, over the air, in September. The update was described as addressing a recall, for a safety issue where the backup camera would sometimes not work. Since the recall update, I've had issues with the backup camera not working, at the same time all of the cameras, proximity warnings, and rear emergency braking do not work. Far from this software update fixing a safety concern, it appears to have created one. The only answer I could get from the Volvo USA help line was to "take it to a dealer". I thought they would be more concerned given that they have just carried out a recall action that has created a safety issue!

While driving on crowded I40 near Statesville NC, the engine started to stutter and moments later quit entirely. Fortunately we were able to move to the shoulder with only a few seconds to spare. This was very dangerous as we had to move through the right lane in front of speeding semi trucks. The only warning light received was that there was an engine problem, that the car would go into “safe” mode. This was mere seconds before entirely disabling the engine. Had we come to a halt on the highway there would have been a serious accident and injury to ourselves and most likely others. We contacted Volvo, a tow was dispatched and the car was winched on to a flat bed trailer and we were transported to a dealer in Hickory. Later it was confirmed that the Integrated Starter General (ISG) had failed and that power had been interrupted to the hybrid battery. There is a serious problem here and I suspect may impact other “mild hybrid” systems that install integrated alternator/starte

20250310BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

The back up camera frequently does not work. When you put the car in reverse, the screen where the back up view should appear will state, “Camera is Temporarily Unavailable “. The dealer replaced the camera with no improvement. This fault occurs several times per week.

20241121EXTERIOR LIGHTING

My vehicle is an XC60. The headlights fogged up and the fog caused issues with driving in the dark. It took four days for the fog to resolve itself. During that time, at night, you could see the fogged areas in the beam. I took the car to a Volvo dealership and they were not able to replicate the issue, likely because it is not as hot now as it was when this occurred. They told me to open a case with Volvo USA. I sent them photographs. They then responded that there was no evidence of condensation, but condensation was normal and would clear up as it did in this case. The sentence is clear that there was condensation while saying there was no condensation. The headlights are a safety issue and the car is under warranty for 10 years. The headlights should be replaced. I shouldn’t be in a position to fight a company that prides itself on safety about headlights, which are critical for safe driving at night. This is a common issue. I searched and found multiple people with the same prob

20241105ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

The contact owns a 2022 Volvo XC60. The contact stated while driving 50 MPH, the vehicle decelerated independently and then stalled. The contact pulled over to the side of the roadway and turned off the vehicle. While attempting to restart the vehicle, the vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed back to residence and then towed to a dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that there was coolant leaking into the engine, and the battery needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V793000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

20241023BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

System regularly displays "Camera is temporarily unavailable" when backing up, requires full reboot of head unit to resolve. Backup cameras regularly not activating upon vehicle startup. This is a daily occurrence and has not been fixed with updates (in fact, it's gotten more frequent).

20240926ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Case number 240821-000271 was opened on 8/21/24 with Volvo Car USA Support. I have three main concerns: 1) The infotainment system losing the favorites that I have saved in the Sirius application. This had been an intermittent problem that I had been having since I purchased the car. I finally took it into the service department at Volvo Cars of Gilbert on 1/7/23 for this problem (Invoice Number VOCS110975). The service department was unable to recreate the problem so they did nothing. 2)A complete car system reboot while I was driving on 6/10/24. As I was driving down the road the HVAC system shut off and the dash and infotainment system screens went blank. All car systems completely shut down except the engine. This was an extremely frightening experience as all of this happened with no warning whatsoever WHILE I WAS DRIVING. This is a huge safety issue! Within about a minute of driving like this the systems started to come back up. I proceeded home. The next morning I took the c
