Within that volume, owners reported 0 crashes, 0 fires, 0 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1999 X70 is vehicle speed control with 2 filings, followed by engine and engine cooling (1) and electrical system (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 28 investigation files overlapping the 1999 X70. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. I HAVE JUST REPLACED THE ETS ON MY 1999 VOLVO XC. OVER THE LAST 15 MONTHS, OUR VOLVO HAS UNDERGONE A COMPLETE COLLAPSE. IT STARTED WITH A BLOWN HEAD, DESPITE HAVING THE CAR SERVICED REGULARLY. MY REPAIRMAN SAID THE CAR HAD EXPERIENCED A HEAT PROBLEM BEFORE WE PURCHASED IT, IN HIS OPINION. SINCE THAT TIME, WE HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE ABS AND ETS MODULES. THE CAR IS STILL NOT RUNNING. DESPITE REPLACING THE ETS, THE VOLVO DEALER CLAIMS THEY CANNOT GUARANTEE THE UNIT. WHILE WE DRIVE, THE ENGINE JUST STOPS. SEVERAL TIMES THIS HAS HAPPENED IN TRAFFIC AND WE HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE TO MAKE IT TO THE BERM. THIS HAS CONTINUED TO HAPPEN. WE HAVE USED A MECHANIC OTHER THAN VOLVO BECAUSE THE DEALER HAS BEEN SO NON-RESPONSIVE. AT THIS MOMENT MY REPAIRMAN IS AWARE OF 8 CARS IN CHATTANOOGA EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEMS. *JB
