MY 2000 VOLVO XC70 DEVELOPED A DANGEROUS ENGINE CONDITION THAT NEEDS TO BE REPORTED AND CORRECTED. THE DASHBOARD INDICATED A RED ETS LIGHT WHICH ACCORDING TO THE OWNERS MANUAL NEEDS TO BE DIAGNOSED BY A CERTIFIED VOLVO MECHANIC. I TOOK THE CAR TO AN INDEPENDENT VOLVO GARAGE WHO IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM AS A THROTTLE BODY MALFUNCTION IN THE INTAKE OF THE ENGINE. THE GARAGE MADE A TEMPORARY ($300) REPAIR AND RECOMMENDED THAT I VISIT A VOLVO DEALER AND WARNED THAT AN APPROPRIATE REPAIR WOULD COST AS MUCH AS $1,000 INCLUDING PARTS AND LABOR. ACCORDING TO THE VARIOUS VOLVO FORUMS, THIS IS A COMMON AND COSTLY PROBLEM WITH THESE VOLVOS. THE SYMPTOMS INCLUDE HESITATION WHEN ACCELERATING, FLUCTUATING IDLE RPM AND OUTRIGHT STALLING. THIS IS A DANGEROUS CONDITION. I HAVE PARKED THE CAR UNTIL I CAN BE REASONABLY ASSURED THAT THIS CAN BE SUITABLY REPAIRED PREFERABLY AT VOLVO EXPENSE. *TR

WHILE DRIVING OUR 2000 VOLVO V70 XC, THE THROTTLE BEGAN ACTING STRANGE, REQUIRING US TO PRESS MUCH MORE THAN USUAL ON THE THROTTLE TO AVOID THE ENGINE CUTTING OUT, WHILE PULLING OUT INTO TRAFFIC. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED A FAULTY ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE, AND I WAS TOLD IT WOULD BE COVERED UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. THE PART WAS ORDERED, AND IN EARLY JANUARY 2010, I RETURNED TO THE DEALER FOR INSTALLATION. THE CAR HAS BEEN GETTING WORSE, AND WE HAVE COME VERY CLOSE TO HAVING AN ACCIDENT DUE TO THE FAULTY DESIGN. WHEN THE CAR WAS BROUGHT TO THE DEALER FOR THE WARRANTY REPAIR, THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE CAR WAS 'WARRANTY EXCLUDED', AND WOULD NOT BE COVERED, DUE TO THE STATUS OF THE TITLE. MY RESEARCH HAS INDICATED THAT THIS IS AN EXTREMELY COMMON PROBLEM, WHICH THERE WAS A RECALL TO RECALIBRATE THE THROTTLE, BUT NO RECALL TO ADDRESS THE ACTUAL FAILURE. THIS SEEMS ODD THAT VOLVO WOULD NOT HONOR THE SPIRIT OF THE RECALL. *TR

UPON ARRIVING AT DESTINATION AFTER A 9 HOUR TRIP TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 67MPH AVERAGE, BOTH RIGHT SIDE TIRES HAD LARGE BULGES IN THE SIDEWALL. THE RIGHT REAR TIRE HAS A GOLFBALL SIZED BULGE, THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE SLIGHTLY SMALLER. THE SIDEWALL HAS OBVIOUSLY FAILED AND THE TIRE IS QUITE SPONGY AT THE BULGE. FAILURE WAS CAUGHT BEFORE AN ACCIDENT WAS CAUSED, HOWEVER THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A LOSS OF LIFE ACCIDENT IF THE TIRES HAD FAILED CATASTROPHICALLY. *TR
