Within that volume, owners reported 0 crashes, 0 fires, 0 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1998 V70AWD is fuel system, gasoline with 2 filings, followed by service brakes, hydraulic:antilock/traction control/electronic limited slip:control unit/module (1) and electrical system (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 28 investigation files overlapping the 1998 V70AWD. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. ON JULY 12, 2005 MY VOLVO V70R AWD WAGON STOPPED WITHOUT WARNING WHILE IT WAS BEING DRIVEN. IT WOULD NOT START AGAIN AND HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER SAID THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE COST WAS $385.19. THIS WAS AN EXTREMELY SCARY EXPERIENCE AND COULD HAVE BEEN LIFE-THREATENING IF WE HAD BEEN DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. WHEN I HEARD ABOUT SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH 1999-2001 VOLVOS, I THOUGHT MY YEAR CAR MAY ALSO FALL INTO THIS GROUP. VOLVO CLAIMS TO BE THE BEST WHEN IT COMES TO SAFETY BUT THIS EXPERIENCE HAS MADE ME FEEL THAT MY CAR IS NOT RELIABLE AND IS UNSAFE. *NM

WITHOUT WARNING MY 1998 VOLVO V70 AWD WAGON SHUTS OFF...WHILE DRIVING. POWER STEERING AND ALL. I'VE SPENT OVER $700 IN REPAIRS AND THE MECHANIC CANNOT FIGURE IT OUT. NOW I DARE NOT TAKE IT ON A HIGHWAY. THE RECENT REPORTS OF THIS HAPPENING TO YEARS 1999 AND ON MUST BE AMENDED TO INCLUDE THE 1998. I BOUGHT THIS WAGON BECAUSE OF VOLVO'S LONGEVITY REPUTATION. NOW IT'S A POTENTIAL ROAD HAZARD. *NM
