NHTSA Complaint about BACK OVER PREVENTION: CAMERA SYSTEM filed August 4, 2021

NHTSA complaint #1761274 (ODI reference 11427711) concerns a 2020 FORD EXPLORER and was filed on August 4, 2021. The owner reports the failure occurred on August 1, 2021. The report was geocoded to Ohio based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as back over prevention: camera system, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same FORD EXPLORER cohort independently describe similar back over prevention: camera system failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2020 FORD EXPLORER shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.

Complaint Description

Vehicle would not start and every warning lamp and alert triggered on the dashboard. Tried remote start which was successful, but vehicle shut off 5 seconds later and the above alerts/warning lamps repeated. Vehicle would not start and just repeated all of the warning lamps/alerts. Waited 20 minutes, car started without issue; however, when put into reverse WITH FOOT ON THE BRAKE the vehicle started to drive backwards WHILE FOOT WAS STILL ON THE BRAKE! No amount of pressure on the brake pedal stopped the vehicle. Had to depress and repress the pedal to stop the vehicle. Rear cameras failed to activate as well. Luckily no one was injured. This is the third time this has happened, the third time I have reported to the NHTSA, and the third time I have reported it to my local dealership without resolve.
