NHTSA Complaint about SERVICE BRAKES, AIR filed November 21, 2014

NHTSA complaint #1133353 (ODI reference 10660016) concerns a 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS and was filed on November 21, 2014. The owner reports the failure occurred on May 8, 2012. The vehicle had 30,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Connecticut based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as service brakes, air, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same TOYOTA PRIUS cohort independently describe similar service brakes, air failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

AS SOON AS I WAS PAST THE COVER THE BRAKES ENGAGED AND STOPPED THE CAR. I NOTICED THIS OCCURRING EVERY TIME I WOULD BRAKE ON AN UNEVEN SURFACE WHERE THERE WAS SPACE BETWEEN ONE OF THE FRONT TIRES AND PAVEMENT. I HAD BOUGHT THE SAME MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR VEHICLE FOR MY SON 11 MONTHS LATER AND NOTICED THE SAME PROBLEM WHILE TEST DRIVING IT. WHEN I QUESTIONED THE SALESMAN ABOUT IT I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS THE WAY THE ABS WORKS AND THAT IT WAS NORMAL. ON 11/20/2014 WHILE CHECKING THE AIRBAG RECALL LIST I NOTICED A RECALL FOR THE SAME PROBLEM THAT I WAS HAVING, RECALL ANNOUNCED 2/9/2010, NHTSA REF # 10V03900 SO I CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE 1-800-331-4331 AND WAS TOLD THAT NEITHER CARS' VIN# SHOWED IN THE RECALL SO IT COULD NOT BE HAPPENING AND I WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. THEY REFERRED ME TO A TOYOTA DEALER WH
