Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about STRUCTURE:BODY:TAILGATE:HINGE AND ATTACHMENTS filed November 20, 2007

NHTSA complaint #646837 (ODI reference 10209517) concerns a 2004 TOYOTA SIENNA and was filed on November 20, 2007. The owner reports the failure occurred on November 17, 2007. The affected component is categorized as structure:body:tailgate:hinge and attachments, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 1, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. No VIN was supplied by the filer, so this complaint contributes to model-year trend data but cannot be tied to a specific vehicle.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same TOYOTA SIENNA cohort independently describe similar structure:body:tailgate:hinge and attachments failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

POWER TAILGATE/REAR HATCH COMES DOWN WITHOUT WARNING. IT WOULD ONLY DO IT ONCE AND A WHILE BUT NOW ITS EVERYTIME. MY WIFE HAS BEEN CAUGHT WHEN IT COMES DOWN. EVEN WHEN MANUALLY PULLING THE TAILGATE UP IT DOES NOT STAY UP. THIS IS A VERY HEAVY TAILGATE AND IS DANGEROUS IF A CHILD WOULD GET CAUGHT IN BETWEEN THE OPENING AND THE TAILGATE. *TR
