NHTSA Complaint about LANE DEPARTURE: ASSIST filed September 30, 2024

NHTSA complaint #2028827 (ODI reference 11617335) concerns a 2021 TESLA MODEL Y and was filed on September 30, 2024. The owner reports the failure occurred on September 29, 2024. The report was geocoded to New York based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as lane departure: assist, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same TESLA MODEL Y cohort independently describe similar lane departure: assist failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

When driving on highways the car will jerk the steering wheel and cause the car to turn when the car is in the center of the lane. This causes the driver to counter the force from the steering wheel to keep the car on the road. This only happens when autopilot and full self driving are not being used. I have taken it to the service center twice. The first time they said it was an issue with the car alignment so they realigned the tires and the second time they said it was a problem with the car’s computer so they replaced the computer. This continues to happen and is dangerous. Sometimes it will give a lane departure warning while other times there are no warnings.
