NHTSA Complaint about VISIBILITY:DEFROSTER/DEFOGGER/HVAC SYSTEM:REAR WINDOW filed November 14, 2023

NHTSA complaint #1942999 (ODI reference 11555069) concerns a 2023 HONDA HR-V and was filed on November 14, 2023. The owner reports the failure occurred on November 13, 2023. The report was geocoded to New York based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as visibility:defroster/defogger/hvac system:rear window, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same HONDA HR-V cohort independently describe similar visibility:defroster/defogger/hvac system:rear window failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2023 HONDA HR-V shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.

Complaint Description

After leaving work on 11/13/23, I came out to my car which had been parked since 9am and the rear window (back window) was completely shattered. This was the first day since last year that I had turned on my rear defroster on the way to work. There were no other markings, and no object on the ground that could have shattered the window. I called the police, who agreed that It did not look like criminal action had taken place. The security of the school which I work at filed an incident report and are in the process of evaluating cameras. Upon reading online, I became aware that many owners of the 2023 HONDA HRV have had a similar issue regarding the rear window shattering after using the rear defroster.
