NHTSA complaint #1942338 (ODI reference 11554612) concerns a 2023 HONDA HR-V and was filed on November 11, 2023. The owner reports the failure occurred on November 10, 2023. The report was geocoded to California based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as visibility:defroster/defogger/hvac system:rear window, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same HONDA HR-V cohort independently describe similar visibility:defroster/defogger/hvac system:rear window failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

I used the defroster for 10-15 minutes as I could not see out the back window. I turned it off, parked, and idled while answering email. I heard an explosion. Checked all windows, no gusts of cold air, the cars near me hadn't moved. I got out and looked around at car windows tires, in the dark it looked ok. I thought it was Disneyland and also thought I hope noone got shot. I walked away for 90 minutes for my son's hockey game. As I walked to my car. A car passing me illuminated my shattered windshield.
