2019 GMC SIERRA 1500 — Complaint #1888553

Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about SUSPENSION filed April 18, 2023

NHTSA complaint #1888553 (ODI reference 11517636) concerns a 2019 GMC SIERRA 1500 and was filed on April 18, 2023. The owner reports the failure occurred on April 9, 2023. The report was geocoded to Michigan based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as suspension, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same GMC SIERRA 1500 cohort independently describe similar suspension failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

At 50,000 miles the upper control arm/ball joint on the driver side came apart with no warning causing considerable damage to the suspension, tires, wheel, and front bumper. About two months before at approximately 48,000 miles the passenger side control arm/ball joint came apart again with no warning. Warranty has just elapse and GM has denied any responsibility and will not cover any of the repairs. This could have easily been catastrophic if we would have been on the freeway. This is a Safety issue! This truck has the aluminum upper control arms which my opinion for what its worth is the problem. I have no clue at this time how we are going to be able to fix this. Even when it is fixed we will never trust it.
