NHTSA Complaint about LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH filed July 28, 2021

NHTSA complaint #1759990 (ODI reference 11426760) concerns a 2019 FORD MUSTANG and was filed on July 28, 2021. The owner reports the failure occurred on July 27, 2021. The report was geocoded to Louisiana based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same FORD MUSTANG cohort independently describe similar latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2019 FORD MUSTANG shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.

Complaint Description

While driving on highways, passenger door will suddenly partially unlatch and open door warning tone and advisory displays on the dash. I must pull over in order to open and reclose the door. First event was several months ago and I assumed it was an isolated event. It has increased in frequency to at least once a week. The door is closed and locked yet it comes partially unlatched and seems to only occur at highway speeds between 60mph and 75mph. Highly distracting when driving on interstate highway and I am unsure if it comes unlatched all the way since I have not had a passenger when this occurs. Poses safety hazard both as distraction and unsafe door lock.
