NHTSA Complaint about VISIBILITY:DEFROSTER/DEFOGGER/HVAC SYSTEM:HEATER CORE filed December 29, 2016

NHTSA complaint #1344438 (ODI reference 10938426) concerns a 2013 DODGE AVENGER and was filed on December 29, 2016. The owner reports the failure occurred on December 5, 2016. The vehicle had 97,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Alabama based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as visibility:defroster/defogger/hvac system:heater core, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. No VIN was supplied by the filer, so this complaint contributes to model-year trend data but cannot be tied to a specific vehicle.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same DODGE AVENGER cohort independently describe similar visibility:defroster/defogger/hvac system:heater core failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

TAMARA RECALL. OK I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE HEATER CORE IN MY 2013 DODGE AVENGER. I'VE TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY TELL ME THAT THE HEATER CORE IS PLUGGED AFTER FURTHER INVESTIGATION ON THE INTERNET I LEARNED I'M NOT THE ONLY CONSUMER WITH THIS PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP TELLS ME IT A DEFECT IN THE MANUFACTURING OF THE HEATER CORE FROM THE FACTORY BUT NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED AT THIS TIME AND THERE IS SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS. I HAVE HEAT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE BUT BLOWS COLD ON THE PASSENGER SIDE NOT ALLOWING THE DEFROST TO MELT THE ICE ON THE WINDSHIELD. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION AND COULD CAUSE TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS. UPON YOUR INVESTIGATION YOU WILL FIND ITS NOT JUST ONE MAKE AND MODEL IT'S SEVERAL AND THE MANUFACTURER AND THE DEALERSHIP KNOW IT A PROBLEM BUT WILL NOT CORRECT IT. I'M SENDING THIS MESSAGE TO SEE IF THERE'S SOMETHING THAT CAN BE DONE. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR TIME. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U
