Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 15 investigation files overlapping the 1999 300. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. ON MAY 26, 2006, MY MERCEDES BENZ 1999 300D LOST ALL POWER DURING ROUTINE OPERATION. THE CAR STALLED WHILE IN MOTION IN REGULAR TRAFFIC, AND WAS REQUIRED TO BE TOWED TO A MERCEDES BENZ DEALERSHIP. I WAS NOTIFIED THAT THE REASON FOR THE FAILURE WAS A DEFECTIVE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR. PART NUMBER 003-153-74-28. THE PART WAS REPLACED. WHEN THE CAR WAS RETURNED, IT WAS DRIVEN NO MORE THAN 12 MILES WHEN THE EXACT SAME CONDITION RE-OCCURRED WHILE THE CAR WAS IN MOTION IN TRAFFIC. THE CAR WAS TOWED AGAIN AND REPAIRED ON JUNE 2, 2006 AT A MERCEDES BENZ DEALERSHIP, AND THIS TIME THE REASON GIVEN FOR THE FAILURE WAS A BROKEN PRE-FILTER AND MAIN FUEL FILTER. PARTS NUMBER 601-092-01-05, 601-090-16-52, AND 601 997-01-48. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS MATTER PROMPTLY, AS THERE APPEARS TO BE A CONDITION WHICH CAN CAUSE THE LOSS OF ALL POWER WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION. *NM
