Within that volume, owners reported 1 crash, 0 fires, 0 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1999 XJR is engine and engine cooling:engine:gasoline with 2 filings, followed by tires (1) and vehicle speed control (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 2 investigation files overlapping the 1999 XJR. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. ENGINE DEFECT - INABILITY OF JAGUAR MAINTENANCE TO REPAIR: THE 1999 JAGUAR XJR WHICH WAS PURCHASED JUNE 2002 WITH 21,715 MILES ON IT FOR $40,000.00. VEHICLE WAS LEMON FROM BEGINNING. ENGINE STALLED AT HIGH SPEEDS, SHOWED ITSELF TWICE AS EARLY AS JANUARY 2003, ONLY TO CONTINUE SHOWING ITSELF 3 MORE TIMES IN 2003, 2 MORE TIMES IN 2004, 1 MORE TIME IN 2005, AND ONE MORE TIME IN 2006,. THEN, AGAIN ON JUNE 13, 2007, A TOTAL OF 10 TIMES. EXAMPLE OF SERIOUS ENGINE STALLING DEFECT. ON MAY 5, 2003, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING TO WORK IN THE JAGUAR. SHE WAS ON THE DULLES TOLL ROAD TRAVELING AT ABOUT 60 MPH WHEN THE ENGINE DIED. THE CAR FINALLY CAME TO A STOP IN THE MIDDLE LANE OF THE TOLL ROAD. CARS WERE ?WHIZZING? BY AT HIGH SPEEDS ON THE LEFT AND THE RIGHT OF OUR STALLED VEHICLE. MIRACULOUSLY, NO CAR HIT THE STOPPED CAR, AND LUCKILY, SHE WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE ENGINE, WHICH COULD NOT ALWAYS BE RESTARTED WHEN THESE INCIDENTS OCCURRED, AND DROVE IT DIRECTLY TO THE JAGUAR DEALER. THIS INCIDENT STARTED IN NOV. OF 2003 IT IS STILL ONGOING AS I WRITE. I WISH THE INCIDENT DATE INCLUDED CONTINUS.EVEN AFTER MY 60K TUNE UP A WEEK AGO, THE FAILURE STARTED AGAIN. VEHICLE LOOSES POWER ON A DOWN GRADE AND I MUST PULL OVER AND START THE CAR AGAIN.ALSO CAR HOLDS BACK POWER AND THEN WITHOUT NOTICE STOPS AND THEN BUCKS FORWARD. I HAVE ALMOST BEEN HIT FROM BEHIND BECAUSE THE CAR STOPS WITH NO TAIL LIGHTS TO NOTIFY THE DRIVER BEHIND ME. ALSO I HAVE ALMOST HIT THE DRIVER INFRONT OF ME BECAUSE THE CAR JUMPS/LEARCHS FORWARD AFTER "STOPPING". I NO LONGER ENJOY DRIVING THIS CAR.I AM SCARED TO DEATH I WILL INJURE OR BE INJURED BY THIS PROBLEM! I WILL NOT PURCHASE ANOHTER JAG UNTIL THIS PROBLEM IS FIXED BY FORD. PLEASE RECALL THIS VEHICLE!!!! PLEASE READ JAG OWNERS CHAT ROOMS THIS PROBLEM IS QUITE EXTENSIVE!*AK

1999 JAGUAR XJR, THE CAR STALLED WHILE CRUISING BETWEEN 60 AND 70 MPH 3 TIMES IN 4 MONTHS. THE ENGINE WOULD QUIT. THE CAR WOULD NOT RESTART UNTIL I PULLED OVER PUT IT IN PARK AND STARTED IT. THIS MEANT A LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND THE BRAKES POSSIBLY FAILING IF THEY WERE USED TO MUCH. THE CAR WAS REPAIRED ON 2-16-04. THE THROTTLE BODY HAD DEVELOPED A GROVE WHERE THE THROTTLE PLATE CONTACTS THE BORE. THIS WAS CAUSING THE PROBLEM. THIS STALLING PUTS THE DRIVER IN A DANGEROUS POSITION ON THE HIGHWAY. ON THE LAST OCCASION HAD TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE WHERE THERE WAS NO SHOULDER. FORTUNATELY THE TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT. *JB
