Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1997 XJ6 is vehicle speed control with 2 filings, followed by vehicle speed control:accelerator pedal (2) and suspension:front (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 2 investigation files overlapping the 1997 XJ6. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD. DEALER ACKNOWLEDGES THIS IS ONGOING IN JAGUARS UNTIL CORRECTED IN 2001.OFTEN THERE IS NO RESPONSE TO PRESSURE ON THE GAS PEDAL AND THEN SUDDENLY THE CAR WILL JUMP FORWARD. PROBLEM WITH GAS PEDALS STICKING NOT DISCLOSED AT TIME OF PURCHASE. DEALERSHIP SAYS MAINT. NEEDED EVERY 5000-1000 MILES. WE HAD THE PROBLEM ADDRESSED 10 MONTHS AGO AND ONLY DROVE THE CARR APPROX. 2200 MILES SINCE. WE WERE NOT TOLD THIS NEEDED REGULAR MAINT. WE WERE TOLD THAT THE PART WAS CLEANED AND SHOULD BE OKAY. NEVER WOULD WE HAVE PURCHASED A CAR KNOWING THAT THERE WAS A CHRONIC SAFETY PROBLEM WITH THE GAS PEDAL STICKING. EVERY SERVICE REP. WE SPOKE TO AKNOWLEDGES THAT THEY HAVE HANDLED HUNDREDS OF THESE PROBLEMS. WHY WASN'T THERE A RECALL OR DISCLOSURE?*AK
WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED IT IS LOWER THAN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAUSING BOTH PEDALS TO BECOME ENGAGED AT TIMES RESULTING IN THE CAR JUMPING FORWARD.
