Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.

NHTSA currently has 2 investigation files overlapping the 2005 XJ. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. I WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT UPON MOVING FORWARD I HEARD A LOUD GRINDING NOISE FROM THE REAR OF THE CAR AND LOST MY TRANSMISSION. THIS LEFT ME STRANDED IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY INTERSECTION AT RUSH HOUR WITH NO WARNING FORTUNATELY NO ONE CRASHED IN TO ME. I CALLED POLICE AND TOW TRUCK. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO DEALERSHIP WHO HAVE REPLACED DIFFERENTIAL AND REAR AXLES. THE PRELIMINARY EXPLANATION GIVEN WAS THAT SOMETHING APPEARS TO HAVE BROKEN OFF THAT GROUND UP THE DIFFERENTIAL. AFTER COMPLETION OF REPAIR I WAS ONLY TOLD THAT THERE HAD BEEN A MALFUNCTION. VEHICLE IS 4 YEARS OLD WITH ABOUT 44000 MILE ON IT. THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED AND I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS COULD HAPPEN AGAIN AND THAT IF IT HAD OCCURRED AT HIGH SPEED I MIGHT NOT BE HERE TO WRITE THIS COMPLAINT. *TR THE CONSUMER STATED THE TRANSMISSION HAS SINCE FAILED AGAIN. UPDATED 01/27/10.*JB
