TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 CHRYSLER SEBRING. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE HAD BEEN OPERATING THE VEHICLE FOR APPROXIMATELY 15 MINUTES WHEN SMOKE WAS SEEN COMING FROM THE ENGINE AREA. A FIRE DID NOT ERUPT. ONE WEEK LATER THE VEHICLE BEGAN STALLING SPORADICALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WHO ADVISED THAT TRANSMISSION FLUID WAS LEAKING INTO THE ENGINE. THE POLICE APPEARED ON THE SCENE AND THE DRIVER WAS INJURED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE REAR DRIVERS SIDE UPPER BALL JOINT FRACTURED FROM THE CONTROL ARM. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. I WAS DRIVING WEST ON JEFFERSON AVE IN DETROIT. THERE ARE TRAFFIC SIGNALS AT BOTH ENDS OF A SHORT BRIDGE WHERE IT PASSES OVER I-375. I STOPPED AT THE FIRST AND, WHEN THE LIGHT CHANGED, STARTED FORWARD, THE SECOND TRAFFIC SIGNAL TURNED RED. THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME STOPPED, BUT, WHEN I TOOK MY FOOT OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR AND PUT IT ON THE BRAKE, THE CAR CONTINUED ACCELERATING AND, ALTHOUGH I WAS LITERALLY STANDING UP ON THE BRAKE, IT HAD NO EFFECT AND I HIT THE STOPPED VEHICLE IN FRONT OF

THE AIRBAGS IN 2001 CHRYSLER SEBRING DID NOT DEPLOY IN A FRONT IMPACT CRASH**CC THE CONSUMER SUBMITTED A CLAIM TO THE MANUFACTURER, HOWEVER IT WAS DENIED. THE MANUFACTURERS CLAIMED, THE IMPACT DIDN'T SIGNIFICANTLY INVOLVE THE FRAME AND IT DID NOT CREATE THE LONGITUDINAL (FRONT TO BACK) NECESSARY TO DEPLOY THE AIR BAGS. THE CONCLUSION WAS SUPPORTED BY THE READINGS FROM THE ONBOARD COMPUTER THAT DISCLOSED NO CODES-INDICATING THAT THE AIRBAG SYSTEM WAS FULLY OPERATIONAL AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT

THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY DURING THE CRASH. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE CRASH DID NOT CREATE THE LONGITUDINAL BACK TO FRONT DECELERATION NECESSARY TO DEPLOY AIR BAG. THE CHROME PLATE ON THE INTERIOR DOOR HANDLE HAS "SPLIT". THIS HAS CAUSED ME TO CUT MY FINGER ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WHEN OPENING THE DOOR. I HAVE ASKED TWO DEALERS TO REPAIR THE HANDLE. I AM TOLD THAT IT WILL COST IN EXCESS OF $500.00 TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE DOOR PANEL. I FIND IT DIFFICULT TO BELIEVE THIS EXPENSE TO REPLACE A $10-15.00 PART. IT WAS A "DEFECT" IN THE PRODUCTION OF THE HANDLE, NOT ABUSE, THAT HAS CREATED THIS SITUATION. I WAS IN TOUCH WITH CUSTOMER "DISSERVICE" ON ONE OCCASION,

EVENTUALLY, THE WIRE CAME DETACHED, MAKING THE REAR DEFROSTER BOTH INOPERABLE AND A FIRE/HEALTH HAZARD. A USELESS REAR DEFROSTER MEANS A USELESS REAR WINDOW. NO DIRECT BACKWARDS VISIBILITY OTHER THAN THE OUTSIDE REARVIEW MIRRORS.
