Within that volume, owners reported 0 crashes, 0 fires, 1 injury, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.

Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1997 CHRYSLER is visibility:rearview mirrors/devices:interior with 1 filings, followed by service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:disc:pads (1) and engine and engine cooling (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.

NHTSA currently has 81 investigation files overlapping the 1997 CHRYSLER, and 5 remain open. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. Use the related-complaint feed below to read raw owner narratives before deciding whether any pattern here affects your specific use case.

I HAVE A 1997 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE. IT HAS THE "WOBBLE OF DEATH", SO CALLED DUE TO ITS VIOLENT SHAKING OF THE FRONT END. I HAVE SEARCHED IT ONLINE AND FOUND MANY CASES OF THE SAME. I AM AWARE THAT THE VEHICLE IS OVER 10 YEARS OLD, BUT THE MANUFACTURE HAS BEEN WELL AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE "WOB" HAS AFFECTED VEHICLES AS OLD AS 1994. I AM NOT SURE IF THERE IS ANYTHING THAT CAN BE DONE BUT I FEEL LIKE I NEED TO TRY. *TR

I INSTALLED FRONT BRAKE PADS ABOUT 1 MONTH AGO AND NOTICED THE BALL JOINTS WERE VERY LOOSE. THIS WAS COVERED UNDER NHTSA 97V2001000 RECALL. WIFE TOOK CAR IN TO HAVE A RUST THROUGH ON THE HOOD COMPLAINT AND THE BALL JOINT PROBLEM DOCUMENTED AND FIXED.. DEALER SAID IT WAS CHECKED BACK IN 97 AND ITS OK. THEY NEVER CHECKED THE BALL JOINTS. ONE WEEK LATER I AM DRIVING AND THE BALL JOINT BREAKS AS I AM TURNING A CORNER PULLING AWAY FROM A STOP SIGN.*AK
