AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
BMW of North America, LLC. (BMW) is recalling certain 2012-2013 BMW X3 xDrive28i, X3 xDrive35i, and M6 Convertible vehicles and 2013 M6 Coupe vehicles. The affected vehicles have a driver's frontal air bag inflator that may have been improperly welded.

The contact owns a 2012 BMW X3. The contact stated that after his wife parked the vehicle, she shifted the gear into the park (p) position however, after his wife exit the vehicle, the vehicle inadvertently rolled and crashed into a post without warning. No injuries were sustained. No medical attention was required. No police report was filed. SPONTANEOUS ENGINE FIRE WHILE PARKED ON A CITY STREET. COOLANT PUMP REPLACED THE MORNING OF NOV 8TH 2017. ONE HOUR AFTER PICKING UP THE VEHICLE FROM THE DEALER AND A FEW SHORT TRIPS, VEHICLE WAS PARKED, SHUT OFF AND LOCKED. IT DROVE NORMALLY AND THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS. 15-20 MIN LATER ENGINE WAS ON FIRE.

WHILE I WAS DRIVING MY 2012 X3, I APPROACHED A STOP LIGHT. AS I APPLIED THE BRAKES, THE VEHICLE SLOWED DOWN BUT WOULD NOT STOP. THE ENGINE STARTED TO ACCELERATE IN ADDITION TO THE BRAKES FAILING CAUSING ME TO HIT THE REAR END OF THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I CONTINUED TO APPLY THE BRAKES BUT THEY WOULD NOT RESPOND. MY 2012 X3 KEPT ROLLING AND FINALLY STOPPED ONLY AFTER I HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME APPROXIMATELY THREE TIMES. I IMMEDIATELY HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE BMW DEALER WHERE IT SAT FOR APPR

ALL OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED ABRUPTLY CAUSING THE DRIVER TO SUSTAIN INJURIES TO THE FACE, INCLUDING SWELLING AND NERVE DAMAGE. MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS RECEIVED AND A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, BUT THE DIAGNOSTIC REPORT WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 34,000.
