Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2017 S1000 R is electrical system with 1 filings, followed by power train (1) and vehicle speed control (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability. This model year has 1 active recall campaign, which means the manufacturer is obligated to remedy the covered defect at no charge for the life of the vehicle — the full NHTSA campaign numbers are listed below.
NHTSA currently has 34 investigation files overlapping the 2017 S1000 R. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. RIDING 2017 BMW MOTORCYCLE WITH 1140 MILES AT 55 MPH ON HIGHWAY AND BIKE SIMPLY FAULTED OUT TO IDLE RPM AND NEUTRAL GEAR. NO THROTTLE CONTROL, NO GEAR CONTROL. LUCKILY GOT BIKE OFF HIGHWAY AND HAD IT TOWED TO DEALERSHIP (ADVENTURE BMW IN CHESAPEAKE, VA). THEY CLEARED FAULT AND COULD NOT DUPLICATE. DANGEROUS!! WHAT IF I WERE IN A TUNNEL? I HOPE THIS IS NOT A SYSTEMIC ISSUE.
Mileage: 1,140
WHILE UNDER BRISK OR HEAVY ACCELERATION, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATES AND THE ENGINE LOSES POWER, AND THE THROTTLE BECOMES TOTALLY UNRESPONSIVE. IT CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE. THE BIKE HAS TO BE COMPLETELY SHUT OFF, AND ONCE RESTARTED IS RUNS FINE. THIS WAS VERY DANGEROUS AS I WAS ON A FREEWAY UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND THERE WAS NO SHOULDER FOR ME TO PULL OFF ONTO. I COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN STRUCK BY A VEHICLE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THIS HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES IN A MONTH.
