NHTSA currently has 34 investigation files overlapping the 2006 R1200 GS. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. 20130413FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

SMELL OF GASOLINE WHILE RIDING. DISCOVERD FUEL LEAK FROM CRACKS IN PLASTIC FLANGE WHERE FUEL LINE ATTACHES TO FUEL TANK. FOUND OUT THIS IS A COMMON FAILURE. NEW MODELS HAVE A UPDATED PART. *TR

20120912FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

WHILE RIDING THE VEHICLE ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2012 I NOTICED A STRONG FUEL SMELL. WHEN I ARRIVED AT MY DESTINATION MY LEFT PANT LEG WAS SOAKED IN FUEL. AFTER FURTHER INVESTIGATION I DETERMINED THAT THE FUEL PUMP HOUSING HIGH PRESSURE FUEL DISCONNECT FLANGE WAS CRACKED AND LEAKING FUEL DOWN THE LEFT FAIRING IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE VEHICLES LEFT EXHAUST PIPE AND IGNITION. MY EXPERIENCE MATCHES THAT OF ODI ID NUMBER : 10428629. *TR

20120909FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

FUEL PUMP FLANGE IS CRACKED, ALLOWING 40PSI OF FUEL PRESSURE TO STREAM OUT OF TANK. GREAT RISK OF FIRE AS FUEL LANDS DIRECTLY ON EXHAUST. THERE WAS ONLY NO FIRE BECAUSE I NOTICED THE LEAD AND SUBSEQUENT PUDDLE OF FUEL BEFORE BIKE/PIPES GOT HOT. *TR

20090713SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

HAND GUARD ROTATED INTO A POSITION THAT RESTRICTED THE BRAKE LEVER FROM FULLY DISENGAGING THE BRAKES. THIS CAUSED THE BRAKES TO OPERATE WHILE THE MOTORCYCLE WAS IN MOTION. THE OPERATOR NOTICED THAT THE BRAKES WERE SLIGHTLY ENGAGED (DUE TO THE NOISE OF THE BRAKE SERVOS) EVEN THOUGH THE BRAKE LEVER AND PEDAL WERE NOT BEING ENGAGED BY THE OPERATOR. THE PROBLEM WAS RECTIFIED BY TWISTING THE HAND GUARD BACK INTO POSITION. HAD THE PROBLEM NOT BEEN RECTIFIED IN A TIMELY MANNER, OVERHEATING OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM COULD HAVE OCCURRED LEADING TO THE BREAKS LOCKING. BMW IS AWARE OF THIS DEFECT ON THESE MOTORCYCLES AND HAS APPARENTLY STOPPED MAKING THE REPLACEMENT PART. THEY HAVE DESIGNED A PART THAT CAN NOT INTERFERE WITH THE BRAKE OPERATION. RATHER THAN REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE HAND GUARDS, THEY HAVE RECENTLY (IN THE PAST WEEK) NOTIFIED OWNERS BY MAIL WITH A WARNING ABOUT THIS SITUATION, AND SOME STICKERS THAT CAN BE PLACED INSIDE THE HAND GUARDS. *TR
