BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2005-2011 MOTORCYCLES. THE BEARINGS COULD BE SUBJECT TO CORROSION. THIS COULD LEAD TO REDUCED MOVEMENT OF THE LINK LEVER.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 BMW K1300 GT. WHILE RIDING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE ODOR OF FUEL WAS PRESENT. THE CONTACT DISCOVERED FUEL HAD LEAKED FROM THE FUEL PUMP WHERE THE BOSS THREADED INTO THE FLANGE. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE MOTORCYCLE WAS PREVIOUSLY SERVICED PER THE MANUFACTURER'S CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 038538 FOR THE SAME FAILURE IN 2014. DURING THE REPAIRS, A REINFORCEMENT RING WAS INSTALLED TO PREVENT THE SAME FAILURE FROM OCCURRING. THE MANUFACTURER AND LOCAL DEALER WERE NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,815.

THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE ENGINE STARTED TO MISFIRE. THE CONTACT COASTED THE VEHICLE TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FUEL WAS BLOWING ONTO THE ENGINE THAT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN HIM SUSTAINING BURN INJURIES. MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS NOT RECEIVED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE BRAKES AT THE REAR WHEEL LOCKED UP. FORTUNATELY I WAS NOT TRAVELING AT SPEED BUT HAD STOPPED TO GET GAS. IT WAS AT THE PUMP THAT I DISCOVERED THAT THE BRAKE HAD LOCKED UP. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP FOR SIX WEEKS AND THAT TO ME IS AN INDICATION THAT THE PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN SUFFICIENTLY REPORTED. AT THE PUMP I CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP AND I OVERSHOT A LITTLE BIT. A VERY LITTLE AND I COULD HAVE FILLED THE TANK AT THE PLACE. BUT NONE THE LESS I THINK I'LL BACK UP A LITTLE TO GET CLOSER TO THE PUMP. IT WAS AT THIS POINT THAT I COULD NOT MOVE THE BIKE. MY FIRST RESPONSE WAS TO SAY WHAT THE AND CHECK THAT I WASN'T STOPPED AGAINST A ROCK OR DOWN IN A SMALL DEPRESSION. I WASN'T. TRIED AGAIN MAKING SURE I HAD THE CLUTCH LEVER PULLED AND MIGHT HAVE PUT THE MACHINE IN NEUTRAL AND PUSH BACKWARDS VERY HARD TWO OR THREE TIMES. STILL WOULDN'T BUDGE. AT THIS POINT I DECIDED THAT SOMETHING WASN'T RIGHT. I START THE MOTOR, PUT THE MACHINE IN GEAR AND START TO PULL AWAY FROM THE PUMPS.

MY BROTHER IN LAW AND I JUST PURCHASED NEW 2010 BMW R1200RT MOTORCYCLES FROM TWO DIFFERENT DEALERS. WE RODE THEM OVER 600 MILES. WHILE RIDING THE BIKES THE ENGINE WOULD DIE WITHOUT ANY REASON. HIS DIED TWO TIMES AND MINE DIED FIVE TIMES, UNRELATED TO ANY SPECIFIC GEAR, OR RIDING CONDITION, ACCELERATION OR DECELERATION. AFTER RETURNING FROM THE TRIP WE TOOK OUR BIKES TO THE BMW DEALER FOR SERVICE....EXPLAINED THE TROUBLE...THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN SAID HE WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND THAT THERE WAS A BMW RECALL TO FIX THE PROBLEM...BUT HE DIDN'T HAVE EVERYTHING HE NEEDED TO TAKE CARE OF IT.....PROBABLY WOULD BE TWO WEEKS.....I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT BMW IS SELLING BRAND NEW MOTORCYCLES THAT THEY KNOW ARE DEFECTIVE AND EXTREMELY DANGEROUS.....CAN YOU IMAGINE RIDING A MOTORCYCLE AT 70 MILES PER HOUR AND THE ENGINE JUST STOPS WITHOUT ANY WARNING AND FOR NO REASON.....THE BMW DEALERSHIPS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO SELL THE BIKES UNTIL THEY ARE FIXED...... *TR
