BMW IS RECALLING 1,297 MODEL YEAR 2009 K1300 S AND K1300 GT MOTORCYCLES MANUFACTURED BETWEEN OCTOBER 1, 2008 AND MAY 1, 2009. IN CERTAIN RIDING CONDITIONS INVOLVING INCREASED VIBRATION, THE BRAKE FLUID IN THE FRONT RESERVOIR CAN FOAM.
STALLS WHEN CLUTCH IS ENGAGED AND ENGINE SHOULD COME TO IDLE. THE TYPICAL SITUATION IS WHEN PREPARING TO STOP FOR AN INTERSECTION OR OTHER ROAD CONDITION THAT WOULD CALL FOR THE ENGINE TO BE TEMPORARILY DISENGAGED FROM THE TRANSMISSION. RECOMMENDED REPLACE BOTH STEPPER (IDLE) MOTOR AND AIRBOX AT A COST OF OVER $1,000 7/9/2015 39000 MILES REPORTED TO BMW MECHANICSBURG, PA. SAME RECOMMENDATION AS BMW OF MONTREAL. I WAS TOLD THAT THE DEALER HAS SEEN THIS PROBLEM ON SIMILAR BIKES AND THAT THEIR RECOMMENDATION WAS THE SOLUTION. AFTER HAVING THE RECALL , SHOWN BELOW , COMPLETED BACK IN 2009 THIS SAFETY PROBLEM REOCCURRED ON THIS MOTORCYCLE , IN MY VIEW ALL BMW DID WAS REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE PART WITH ANOTHER DEFECTIVE PART. ALL THE SAME PROBLEMS HAVE REOCCURED WITH THE THREE YEARS OF OWNERSHIP ( DRIVEN LESS THEN 5K) ALMOST CAUSING A CRASH 4 TIMES SINCE THE INSTALL OF THE "NEW" DEFECTIVE PARTS , BOTH SWITCH CLUSTER HAVE HAD FAILURES FROM CONTROL LOSS TO NO STARTING AND STALLING. BMW HAS REFUSED TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE SWITCHES UNLESS I PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT STATING THAT HAVE BEEN REPLACED BEFORE UNDER THE RECALL. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT CAN CAUSE DEATH WHEN THE SWITCH FAILS CAUSING THE BIKE TO STALL OR LOSS OF CONTROL. THE SAME DEFECTIVE SWITCHES ARE ALSO NOW BEING REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY ON THE NEWER VERSION OF THIS MOTORCYCLE (K1600XX) , BMW STILL HAVE NOT SUPPLIED WORKING SWITCH CLUSTERS THAT WORK. CLUTCH/BASKET/COVER WERE REPLACED BY THE DEALERSHIP IN MD. REPAIRS IN THE AMOUNT OF $2,897.55 WERE COVERED 100% BY BMWNA. ENGINE ALLEGEDLY TURNED OVER SMOOTHLY, HOWEVER MOTORCYCLE REMAINED INOPERABLE AT THE DEALERSHIP. 05/22/2012: THE INITIAL REPAIR DID NOT FIX ALL THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY THE INITIAL CLUTCH BASKET FAILURE. UPON MOTORCYCLE REASSEMBLY, ADDITIONAL ENGINE KNOCK/NOISE WAS DETECTED. THE MOTORCYCLE REMAINED INOPERABLE AT THE DEALERSHIP. 08/01/2012: MULTIPLE PARTS INCL. THE CONSUMER STATED HE TOOK THE BIKE TO THE DEALER FOUR TIMES AND IT WAS IN THE SHOP AT ONE POINT FOR OVER SIX WEEKS. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE CONSUMER STATED THE BIKE NOW READS 70 MPG, WHEN IT IS ONLY GETTING 42-43 MPG. *JB

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO REPLACED SENSOR ON THE FUEL TANK, AND RECALIBRATED THE COMPUTER. THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. I OWN A 2009 BMW K 1300 GT. I RIDE EXTENSIVELY AND AM EXPERIENCING STALLING WHEN DECELERATING OR COMING TO A STOP. THE STALLING SEEMS TO OCCUR MOST FREQUENTLY WITH THE CLUTCH IN AND THE BIKE WARM. IT IS ERRATIC AND HAS OCCURRED 30 TIMES OVER THE SUMMER. NOW THAT IT IS COOLER THE STALLING IS LESS FREQUENT. WHEN THIS OCCURS MY BRAKING SERVO AND LIGHTS GO OUT. THIS HAS OCCURRED AT NIGHT AT STOP LIGHTS WHEREAS THE SURPRISE STALL CAUSES FUMBLING TO RESTART PLUS I AM NOT AS VISIBLE TO OTHER VEHICLES WHICH IS A SAFETY CONCERN WHEN IT OCCURS. I HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED THE STALLING DURING MY RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC COMMUTE ON A 55 MPH ROAD WITH STOP LIGHTS. I WAS AGAIN VULNERABLE BECAUSE I PRESENTED A HAZARD BY IMMOBILITY TO OTHER DRIVERS.
