The contact owned a 2007 BMW 328XI. The contact stated that upon reaching his destination, he observed smoke emanating from the engine compartment. After a visual inspection, the contact then observed flames within the engine compartment, shortly after which the entire vehicle became engulfed in flames. AFTER A SHORT DRIVE I PARKED THE CAR. I STARTED TO NOTICE SMOKE COMING FROM THE VENTS. I CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD BUT COULD NOT SEE ANY SOURCE. AFTER CLOSING THE HOOD I GOT BACK IN THE CAR AND THEN NOTED FLAMES COMING FROM JUST FORWARD OF THE DASH BOARD. WITHIN SECONDS THE ENTIRE CAR WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. I AM REPORTING THIS NOW BECAUSE OF THE SAFETY RECALL THAT I JUST HEARD ABOUT ON THIS CAR.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE VALVE COVER GASKET FAILED CAUSING THE ENGINE OIL TO LEAK ON THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER BURNING THE OIL CAUSING THE SMOKE TO BLUR THE WINDSHIELD. 2007 BMW 328XI. LOCKING SYSTEM FAILED. UNABLE TO UNLOCK PASSENGER DOORS EITHER WITH THE KEY OR BY PULLING THE DOOR HANDLE FROM THE INSIDE. ONLY THE DRIVER DOOR WAS ABLE TO OPEN FROM THE INSIDE. THIS PRESENTS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE. I HAD TO HAVE MY WIFE AND KIDS CRAWL OUT THE WINDOWS ON CHRISTMAS EVE IN THE CHURCH PARKING LOT SO THAT WE COULD ATTEND CHURCH.
