Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2016 328D is engine with 4 filings, followed by fuel/propulsion system (3) and service brakes (2). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability. This model year has 4 active recall campaigns, which means the manufacturer is obligated to remedy the covered defect at no charge for the life of the vehicle — the full NHTSA campaign numbers are listed below.
NHTSA currently has 34 investigation files overlapping the 2016 328D. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. Use the related-complaint feed below to read raw owner narratives before deciding whether any pattern here affects your specific use case.

(1) Failed component: High Pressure Fuel Pump (2) The vehicle complete shut down without warning leaving the driver stranded on the road. (3) The problem has been assessed and confirmed. (4) The vehicle has been inspected by a certified BMW mechanic. (5) There was no warning prior to failure. Description: While driving at approximately 30 mph, the vehicle shut down. I was told by a certified BMW mechanic that the high pressure fuel pump imploded, sending metal chards through the fuel injection line thereby disabling the vehicle entirely. I inquired as to whether or not a recall had been issued and BMW told me it had not been issued for my vehicle. I have since learned that a recall was issued due to this exact problem but my VIN was not included in the recall, even though it is the year make and model associated with this very problem. The breakdown/disintegration of the equipment sending metal chard throughout the fuel line disabled and ruined the entire fuel system and its componen
The high-pressure fuel pump failed causing the engine to stop completely without any prior warning and the car put itself in park on the highway and would not get out of park to go into neutral or any other gear. This could have caused a very serious crash and highly increased my risk of injury or death. You are more than welcome to inspect it. It is currently sitting at the dealership waiting for a resolution. My safety and the safety of many others on the 65mph highway were put at risk when the car completely stopped in the middle of the road and would not move until the tow truck arrived to drag it on their truck (would not even go into neutral). The problem was confirmed by the BMW dealership of Cincinnati and inspected by them as well. There were absolutely no warning messages, signs, or anything informing me of an issue before this occurred. However, once the car was towed and we turned it back on once it arrived at the dealership and warning lamp appeared on the dashboard.
Collision warning is often inaccurate. Signaling collision when no obstacles are present. Also, EGR Cooler recall still pending.

I WAS DRIVING APPX 45 MPH (SPEED LIMIT) ON A SUBURBAN STREET WHEN THE CAR RAN OUT OF POWER, SLOWED DOWN TO A CRAWL AND BECAME TOTALLY LIMP. MEANWHILE, THE IMAGE ON THE NAVI SCREEN STATED, "POWERTRAIN FAILURE, DRIVE MODERATE SPEED" OR SOMETHING LIKE IT. I MANAGED TO MAKE A VERY SLOW LEFT TURN ONTO A CROSS STREET B/C I WAS IN SHOCK. I WAS ALMOST KILLED BY AN ONCOMING CAR GOING 45-50 MPH. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO RUSNAK BMW; AFTER INVESTIGATION, THEY STATED IT HAD A "BAD FUEL PUMP," AND THAT THEY HAVE "COUNTLESS FUEL PUMP PROBLEMS WITH BMW DIESEL CARS". THE CAR NOW HAS A NEW FUEL PUMP. I COULD HAVE DIED!
