The 2015BMW228I carries 28 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 3 crashes, 3 fires, 5 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2015 228I is electrical system with 6 filings, followed by engine and engine cooling (5) and engine (3). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability. This model year has 3 active recall campaigns, which means the manufacturer is obligated to remedy the covered defect at no charge for the life of the vehicle — the full NHTSA campaign numbers are listed below.
NHTSA currently has 34 investigation files overlapping the 2015 228I. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. Use the related-complaint feed below to read raw owner narratives before deciding whether any pattern here affects your specific use case.

The Power Steering and Stability Control warning lights on my 2015 BMW 228i came on while driving. I took it to the dealership who told me the steering rack needed to be replaced. BMW has a service bulletin B32 12 16 which describes same issue as I am experiencing. 2015 228i is listed as an affected model on the bulletin, but my VIN was not included by BMW.

DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT 60MPH MY SUN ROOF SUDDENLY EXPLODED. THERE WERE NO OTHER CARS NEARBY AND NO OVERPASSES OR SIGNS ABOVE. THE TEMPERATE WAS ABOUT 40F. MY SUN SHADE VISOR WAS CLOSED BUT GLASS STILL CAME DOWN ON THE HEADS OF MYSELF AND THE PASSENGER. I EXITED THE HIGHWAY AT THE FIRST EXIT ABOUT 1/4 A MILE DOWN THE ROAD. THERE WAS NO PHYSICAL DAMAGE TO THE SUNROOF BEFORE THIS HAPPENED.

AS OEM ON MY BMW 2 SERIES ARE PIRELLI CINTURATO P7 A/S RFT (BMW) BWAUTO - RUN FLAT, SIZE:225/40R18, IN THE PAST 3 YEARS I HAVE HAD 6 FLATS DUE TO POTHOLES. THESE TIRES ARE INAPPROPRIATE FOR THE VEHICLE. ANY SIMPLE BUMP AND THEY BLOW. EVEN BMW WARNS ABOUT HOW THEY ARE NOT APPROPRIATE FOR CARS AND ROUGH ROADS. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE BMW REPLACE THESE TIRES AT THEIR EXPENSE BECAUSE THEY ARE INAPPROPRIATE AND A SAFETY PROBLEM AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS.
