NHTSA Complaint about TIRES:VALVE filed December 17, 2012

NHTSA complaint #954106 (ODI reference 10489058) concerns a 2009 MAZDA MAZDA6 and was filed on December 17, 2012. The owner reports the failure occurred on December 16, 2012. The vehicle had 49,583 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Wisconsin based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as tires:valve, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same MAZDA MAZDA6 cohort independently describe similar tires:valve failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

WHEN I WENT TO GO REMOVE THE VALVE STEM CAP TO CHECK THE AIR PRESSURE, THE VALVE STEM BROKE OFF WITH THE VALVE CAP REVEALING THE VALVE CORE. THE TIRE WAS DEFLATED WITHIN SECONDS. FURTHER INSPECTION OF THE VALVE STEM SHOWED THAT IT WAS CORRODED. THE VALVE STEM BROKE OFF EXACTLY AT THE POINT WHERE THE CAP WAS SCREWED TO. THE DEALERSHIP DID NOT COVER THE COST FOR REPAIRS AS MY CAR IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY ANYMORE. THE COST FOR REPAIRS CAME FROM MY POCKET. *TR
