Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about POWER TRAIN:AXLE ASSEMBLY:AXLE SHAFT:SEAL filed December 16, 2012

NHTSA complaint #953930 (ODI reference 10488925) concerns a 2006 PONTIAC SOLSTICE and was filed on December 16, 2012. The owner reports the failure occurred on December 29, 2006. The vehicle had 10,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Alabama based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as power train:axle assembly:axle shaft:seal, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same PONTIAC SOLSTICE cohort independently describe similar power train:axle assembly:axle shaft:seal failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2006 PONTIAC SOLSTICE shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.

Complaint Description

IMMEDIATELY AFTER PURCHASING MY 2006 PONTIAC SOLSTICE IN 2006, I BEGIN EXPERIENCING A NOISE IN THE REAR END OF THE VEHICLE. I TOOK IT IN SEVERAL TIMES FOR REPAIR UNTIL FINALLY IN 2007, PONTIAC RECALLED THE VEHICLE FOR THE POWER TRAIN BEING DEFECTIVE AS LISTED BELOW. I DID NOT HAVE ANY MORE PROBLEMS UNTIL 2010 WHEN THE VEHICLE BEGIN TO MAKE THE SAME NOISE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER GM DEALERSHIP AS THE ONE I PURCHASED FROM HAD CLOSED. THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. THIS PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORST AND NOW THE NOISE IF GETTING VERY BAD AS I AM DECELERATING AND BRAKING. THE GEARS GET MORE DIFFICULT TO CHANGE WHEN THIS HAPPENS. THIS IS THE SAME WAY IT WAS ACTING BEFORE THE DRIVE TRAIN REPLACEMENT. I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER GM DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THEY ONLY REPLACE THEM ONCE UNDER A RECALL. I DON'T UNDERSTAND IF THEY ARE DEFECTIVE THEY SHOULD REPLACE REGARDLESS. I WAS TOLD THEY COULD CHANGE THE FLUID AND REPLACE FOR $700 AT MY COST. 2006 PONTIAC SOLSTICE P
