Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about POWER TRAIN:AXLE ASSEMBLY:AXLE SHAFT:SEAL filed March 6, 2008
NHTSA complaint #660387 (ODI reference 10220234) concerns a 2006 PONTIAC SOLSTICE and was filed on March 6, 2008. The owner reports the failure occurred on February 1, 2006. The vehicle had 1,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Maryland based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as power train:axle assembly:axle shaft:seal, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same PONTIAC SOLSTICE cohort independently describe similar power train:axle assembly:axle shaft:seal failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2006 PONTIAC SOLSTICE shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
PONTIAC SAFETY RECALL 07204 2006 PONTIAC SOLSTICE REAR AXLE SEAL LEAK, THE FAILURE OCCURRED SOON AFTER THE CAR WAS PURCHASED AND WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS, AXLE SEAL WAS REPLACED, UPON RETURN OF THE CAR IT WAS NOTICED THE REAR AXLE WAS MAKING A WHINING NOISE THAT WAS VERY PRONOUNCED AND UNABLE TO TALK OVER. CAR WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER AND THEY CHANGED THE AXLE FLUID AND PUT AN ADDITIVE IN FOR THE WHINE. NOISE DID NOT GO AWAY AND IS STILL PRESENT TO THIS DAY. I RETURNED THE CAR TO THE DEALER 5 MORE TIMES AND WAS TOLD THE NOISE WAS NORMAL. FEB 2008 RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER FROM GM SAYING THE DIFFERENTIAL SEAL NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND "DAMAGED BEARINGS WILL CREATE NOISE" "DIFFERENTIAL COULD JAM AND LOCK THE DRIVE WHEELS WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION" "A CRASH COULD OCCUR WITH OUT WARNING" I RETURNED THE CAR FOR THE RECALL AND THE AXLE SEAL WAS REPLACED AGAIN, UPON RETURN OF THE CAR THE AXLE IS STILL WHINING AS LOUD AS EVER AND IS NOW A VERY HUGE SAFETY CONCERN TO ME
