NHTSA Complaint about VISIBILITY:DEFROSTER/DEFOGGER/HVAC SYSTEM:FAN/MOTOR filed May 8, 2012

NHTSA complaint #917736 (ODI reference 10457797) concerns a 2002 DODGE RAM 1500 and was filed on May 8, 2012. The owner reports the failure occurred on June 7, 2003. The vehicle had 11,615 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Mississippi based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as visibility:defroster/defogger/hvac system:fan/motor, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same DODGE RAM 1500 cohort independently describe similar visibility:defroster/defogger/hvac system:fan/motor failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

VEHICLE BLOWER MOTOR FUSE WAS BLOWN ON THIS OCCASION, AND THEN LATER DATES THE AC CONDENSER FAN FUSE WAS BLOWN. THE 40 AMP FUSE FOR THE BLOWER MOTOR WAS REPLACED TO FIX THE FIRST PROBLEM. THE CONDENSER FAN FUSE WAS REPLACED AT LEAST ONCE, AND THEN THE FUSE BOX - WHERE THE CONDENSER FAN FUSE GOES - MELTED SO THAT THE FUSE COULD NOT BE REPLACED. TAKING IT TO THE DEALER TODAY. ALSO NOTICED LOTS OF DASHBOARD CRACKING COMPLAINTS. I ALSO HAVE A DASHBOARD THAT IS SERIOUSLY CRACKED. PAID TO REPLACE THE PART CLOSEST TO THE WINDOW, BUT THE DASHBOARD OVER THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WAS NOT REPLACED. ASKED DEALER TO REPLACE IT THREE TIMES, AND ALL THREE TIMES THEY SAID NONE WAS IN STOCK. ONE PERSON TOLD ME THAT THEY DON'T LIKE REPLACING THEM BECAUSE OF THE COMPLEXITY OF THE JOB. *TR
