NHTSA Complaint about STEERING:COLUMN LOCKING:ANTI-THEFT DEVICE filed June 22, 2010

NHTSA complaint #794812 (ODI reference 10339417) concerns a 2000 CHEVROLET CORVETTE and was filed on June 22, 2010. The owner reports the failure occurred on June 17, 2010. The vehicle had 46,494 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Maryland based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as steering:column locking:anti-theft device, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same CHEVROLET CORVETTE cohort independently describe similar steering:column locking:anti-theft device failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

ON 6/17/10, MY WIFE ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE OUR 2000 CHEVY CORVETTE MILEAGE 46,494, WHEN SERVICE SECURITY COLUMN CAME ON AND PULL KEY WAIT FOR 10 SECONDS WAS DISPLAYED. SEVERAL ATTEMPTS WERE MADE TO COMPLY WITH THIS SO SHE COULD DRIVE OFF, BUT EACH TIME SHE STARTED IN 1ST GEAR THE VEHICLE WOULD SHUT OFF. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP WHERE THEY HAVE CERTIFIED GM MECHANICS AND THEY ADVISED ME OF A SAFETY RECALL THAT WAS PUT OUT REFERENCE THIS ISSUE AND MY VIN FELL WITHIN THE SERIES OF VEHICLES RECALLED. I CONTACTED A CHEVY DEALERSHIP IN ANNAPOLIS, MD AND GAVE THEM MY VIN. THEY ADVISED THAT ALL RECALLS HAD BEEN COMPLETED ON THAT VEHICLE, SPECIFICALLY RECALL#04V06000. THEY COULD NOT ADVISE WHEN IT WAS PERFORMED AND WHAT DEALERSHIP DID THE RECALL. I HAVE READ SEVERAL DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS THAT SEEM TO HAVE BEEN DONE AND CURRENTLY IN THE PROCESS OF SOME HOW FINDING OUT WHO DID THE RECALL ON MY VEHICLE. *TR
