Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about SUSPENSION:REAR:SPRINGS filed February 24, 2008
NHTSA complaint #658848 (ODI reference 10219029) concerns a 2001 MERCURY SABLE and was filed on February 24, 2008. The owner reports the failure occurred on February 24, 2008. The vehicle had 70,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Illinois based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as suspension:rear:springs, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. No VIN was supplied by the filer, so this complaint contributes to model-year trend data but cannot be tied to a specific vehicle.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same MERCURY SABLE cohort independently describe similar suspension:rear:springs failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
HAVE A 2001 MERCURY SABLE LS PREMIUM WITH ABOUT 70,000 MILES TODAY AFTER BACKING FROM THE GARAGE, I FOUND A BROKEN PIECE OF COIL SPRING ABOUT 6 INCHES LONG, LAYING OF GARAGE FLOOR. ONE END SHOWED A NEW BREAK, THE OTHER END SHOWED A RAGGED, RUSTED BREAK SHOWING THE SPRING HAD ALSO BROKEN AT LEAST ONCE BEFORE THIS DATE. THIS BROKEN SPRING WAS LAYING TOWARDS THE REAR OF THE CAR ABOUT WHERE THE REAR SUSPENSION IS. I SEE THERE IS A RECALL FOR FRONT SPRINGS BREAKING BUT NONE FOR REAR SPRINGS, ALTHOUGH I HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE REAR SPRINGS BREAKING TOO, BECAUSE OF SALT DAMAGE. MYCARSTATS.COM SHOWS AT LEAST 127 COMPLAINTS ON 2001 SABLE REAR SPRING BREAKAGE, THAT ALSO CAUSE INSTANT TIRE DEFLATION. I HAVE BEEN A FORD CUSTOMER SINCE 1955 AND I THINK THEY ARE WRONG TO NOT COVER THIS FAULTY REAR SPRING PROBLEM AS THEY DO WITH THE FAULTY FRONT SPRINGS- I CAN'T HELP THAT SALT IS USED ON ROADS, AND IT IS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE SOMETHING AS HEAVY AND (SHOULD BE) AS STR
