Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:UPPER BALL JOINT filed December 9, 2007

NHTSA complaint #649129 (ODI reference 10211261) concerns a 2004 JEEP LIBERTY and was filed on December 9, 2007. The owner reports the failure occurred on November 24, 2007. The vehicle had 51,761 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Michigan based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as suspension:front:control arm:upper ball joint, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same JEEP LIBERTY cohort independently describe similar suspension:front:control arm:upper ball joint failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

I TOOK MY VEHICLE IN FOR A SAFETY INSPECTION AND FOUND THAT THE RIGHT UPPER BALL JOINT WAS 'VERY LOOSE' AND THE LEFT UPPER BALL JOINT WAS 'LOOSE'. MY 2004 JEEP LIBERTY ONLY HAS 51,761 MILES AND THERE SHOULD NOT BE SUCH A SERIOUS PROBLEM SUCH AS THIS GIVEN THE AGE AND MILEAGE OF THIS VEHICLE. THIS VEHICLE WAS ALREADY RECALLED IN THE SPRING OF 2007 FOR THE LOWER BALL JOINTS. CHRYSLER REFUSED TO PAY FOR MY UPPER BALL JOINT REPAIR. *TR
