Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about STEERING:LINKAGES:ROD:RELAY:CONNECTING filed June 6, 2006
NHTSA complaint #584158 (ODI reference 10159116) concerns a 1995 Toyota 4runner and was filed on June 6, 2006. The owner reports the failure occurred on June 6, 2006. The report was geocoded to Wisconsin based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as steering:linkages:rod:relay:connecting, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. No VIN was supplied by the filer, so this complaint contributes to model-year trend data but cannot be tied to a specific vehicle.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers, the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same Toyota 4runner cohort independently describe similar steering:linkages:rod:relay:connecting failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 1995 Toyota 4runner shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
I RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL NOTICE SSC 50N STEERING RELAY ROD REPLACEMENT FOR MY 1995 TOYOTA 4RUNNER SEVERAL MONTHS AGO. AS OF THIS DATE, THERE ARE NO PARTS AVAILABLE, ACCORDING TO SEVERAL TOYOTA DEALERS, TO MAKE THE REPAIR. DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE PART DEFECT, MY 2 FRONT TIRES ARE WEARING BADLY AND NEED TO BE REPLACED. THIS WILL NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM, JUST COST MORE MONEY WHEN THOSE TIRES NEED TO BE REPLACED. I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE POINT OF A RECALL IF THE MANUFACTURER REFUSES TO SUPPLY PARTS TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. TOYOTA HAS GIVEN ME NO TIMELINE WHEN THE PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AND DANGEROUS. *NM
