Open-data reference.

NHTSA Complaint about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM filed January 9, 2026

NHTSA complaint #2164701 (ODI reference 11709899) concerns a 2026 KIA EV9 and was filed on January 9, 2026. The owner reports the failure occurred on January 5, 2026. The report was geocoded to Louisiana based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as electrical system, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same KIA EV9 cohort independently describe similar electrical system failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

I own a Kia 2026 EV9. We charged the car to 80% (we have reduced the limit to only 80%). The next morning there was no power to the car. The interior lights would not come on door handles would not work. I could not start the vehicle. I read on line of the 12v battery dying and ICCU failures. I charged the battery for 1.5 hours and was able to get the car to start. I immediately drove it to the Kia dealership on 01/05/2026. The service department stated they could charge the battery but had to further diagnose the problem. On 01/08/2026 the service department stated that the tech was "tinkering" on the car and would reload software updates and patches. On 01/09/2026 the service department informed me that the technician still does not know what is wrong with the car and the tech is off again today.
