Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about EQUIPMENT:RECREATIONAL VEHICLE/TRAILER filed February 25, 2023
NHTSA complaint #1876138 (ODI reference 11509096) concerns a 2021 RAM PROMASTER and was filed on February 25, 2023. The owner reports the failure occurred on January 11, 2023. The report was geocoded to California based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as equipment:recreational vehicle/trailer, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same RAM PROMASTER cohort independently describe similar equipment:recreational vehicle/trailer failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2021 RAM PROMASTER shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
While driving Highway 95 in Bullhead City, AZ the awning deployed. I heard a very large noise and the BMPro making a noise as if the awning button was being pressed. I was in the middle lane of the 3 lane hwy and immediately pulled over to the right. My friend removed it on scene and put it in the van. 1. 12 Jan drove it to California. Turned in my van and awning to [XXX], Santa Fe Springs, CA on 13 January. I havenât heard from the dealership but have a lot of email correspondence from the manufacturer, Thor. I donât know what they did with the part. Mileage was 7,740 miles. I opened the awning once at my house right after I bought it. Itâs never been opened since. 2. I could have been injured or died if it would have hit something or someone else and I would have been traveling at a higher rate of speed. Others driving could have been injured or died and at the very least a great deal of property damage. 3. I have no idea what Mike Thompson Dealership did when I drop
