NHTSA Complaint about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION filed September 24, 2021
NHTSA complaint #1770005 (ODI reference 11434203) concerns a 2005 SATURN ION and was filed on September 24, 2021. The owner reports the failure occurred on September 24, 2021. The report was geocoded to Wisconsin based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as electrical system:ignition, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same SATURN ION cohort independently describe similar electrical system:ignition failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2005 SATURN ION shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description

I have to wait most times after turning the car off - for 3-5 minutes through a series of clicking noises in the ignition before the key will release. It is concerning because sometimes I have to get out immediately and the keys donât release. The car automatically locks itself and if I donât roll the window down- I become locked out. It yesterday had a issue with ignition all together and I wonder if itâs related. I was made aware again there were many recalls on this issue and hoped to get it repaired. However it now states there are none unrepaired. Iâm wondering if it is a ongoing problem with the vehicle, itâs repair parts etc and if itâs just not been addressed because itâs so old that so few are left on the road. Thank you. This is a increasing problem and a daily or every time I drive it issue now. I w
