NHTSA Complaint about ELECTRICAL SYSTEM: INTEGRATED TRAILER BRAKE CONTROL filed September 3, 2021

NHTSA complaint #1766494 (ODI reference 11431597) concerns a 2021 FORD F-150 and was filed on September 3, 2021. The owner reports the failure occurred on August 30, 2021. The report was geocoded to Colorado based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as electrical system: integrated trailer brake control, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same FORD F-150 cohort independently describe similar electrical system: integrated trailer brake control failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

While pulling a trailer, truck stops recognizing trailer brake connection without warning. Driver only notices truck brakes are no longer working because trailer is pushing truck while stopping. All other trailer connections, lights, turn signals, are working. When applying trailer brakes from truck controller, truck message says no trailer connected. This problem is intermittent and unpredictable. Sometimes it can be corrected by reconnecting 7 pin adapter but sometimes this does not work and the truck battery has to be disconnected and reconnected. Online forums show this to be a common problem.
