NHTSA Complaint about BACK OVER PREVENTION: CAMERA SYSTEM filed June 8, 2021

NHTSA complaint #1751118 (ODI reference 11420068) concerns a 2017 HONDA RIDGELINE and was filed on June 8, 2021. The owner reports the failure occurred on June 5, 2021. The report was geocoded to Massachusetts based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as back over prevention: camera system, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.

The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.

Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same HONDA RIDGELINE cohort independently describe similar back over prevention: camera system failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description

I own a 2017 Honda Ridgeline and am original owner. Couple of months ago my backup camera went black with only the yellow space image showing on the screen. Went to dealer and they said it was the camera. Made appointment for this repair for $391. After 2 hours they said it wasn't the camera and that the wiring harness in the tailgate was severed and to replace it was $1,641. I said no thanks. In researching online I guess it is a very common problem. You tend to rely on it. There was no warning that it was going to happen. I backed into another vehicle recently that I am sure I would not have had the camera worked. This is not a work truck. It is my daily driver. I currently have almost 38,000 miles on it and have owned it just over 4 years so it is beyond the warranty coverage. In my opinion there should be a recall by Honda Motor Corporation for this serious problem.
