2015 HYUNDAI SONATA — Complaint #1694161
Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about SUSPENSION filed September 21, 2020
NHTSA complaint #1694161 (ODI reference 11360289) concerns a 2015 HYUNDAI SONATA and was filed on September 21, 2020. The owner reports the failure occurred on August 28, 2020. The vehicle had 62,277 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to New Jersey based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as suspension, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 0, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same HYUNDAI SONATA cohort independently describe similar suspension failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Related filings for the same vehicle and component appear below, and the detail page for the full 2015 HYUNDAI SONATA shows the complete component-level complaint distribution alongside any active investigations or recalls.
Complaint Description
ON 8/27/20 WHEN I RETURNED HOME FROM RUNNING ERRANDS, I BACKED INTO MY DRIVEWAY. THIS WAS AROUND 3PM AND I DIDN'T USE THE CAR FOR THE REST OF THE DAY. THE NEXT MORNING I WENT OUT AROUND 3AM TO LEAVE FOR WORK. AS I STARTED TO PULL OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY, I HEARD DRAGGING AND STOPPED THE CAR. WHEN I GOT OUT TO LOOK, MY FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE WAS FLAT. THERE WAS NO INDICATION ON MY DASH AT THAT TIME. MY HUSBAND CAME OUT TO FILL THE TIRE FOR ME AND WE ONLY HEARD HISSING AIR. HE THOUGHT THAT IT WAS SO FLAT THAT IT WAS OFF OF THE RIM SO HE JACKED IT UP TO TAKE THE PRESSURE OFF OF THE TIRE. THE AIR WAS STILL BLOWING OUT OF THE TIRE SO HE REMOVED THE TIRE TO CHECK IT AND FOUND THAT THE ENTIRE THING WAS TORN ON THE INSIDE FROM A BROKEN COIL SPRING. I DON'T KNOW IF IT HAPPENED AS I BACKED INTO THE DRIVEWAY THE DAY BEFORE OR AS I WAS LEAVING FOR WORK THAT MORNING. ALL I KNOW IS THAT MY CAR HAS UNDER 63,000 MILES ON IT AND IF THIS HAD HAPPENED ON A HIGHWAY, WHO KNOWS WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENE
