Open-data reference.
NHTSA Complaint about STRUCTURE:BODY:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE filed March 6, 2017
NHTSA complaint #1361058 (ODI reference 10958877) concerns a 2012 GMC ACADIA and was filed on March 6, 2017. The owner reports the failure occurred on March 1, 2017. The vehicle had 27,000 miles on the odometer at the time of the incident. The report was geocoded to Florida based on the filer's self-reported location. The affected component is categorized as structure:body:hatchback/liftgate, one of NHTSA's standardized taxonomy codes used to group defect patterns across make, model, and year.
The filer flagged the following severity indicators: crash: no, fire: no, injuries: 1, fatalities: 0. No crash, fire, or fatality was associated with this report, which places it in the early-warning stream rather than the priority-review stream. Because a VIN was supplied, this complaint is tied to a specific vehicle and not just a model-year cohort.
Individual complaints are consumer-submitted and unverified by NHTSA engineers — the agency's role at this stage is to collect, index, and make them searchable. What matters for federal action is the pattern: when many owners of the same GMC ACADIA cohort independently describe similar structure:body:hatchback/liftgate failures, defect investigators have grounds to open a PE and request manufacturer data. Complaint Description
BACK IN JANUARY 2017 I TOOK MY CAR IN TO HAVE THE POWER LIFTGATE RECALL WORK DONE AT MY DEALER. ON 3/1/17 IN THE EVENING, WHILE LOADING GROCERIES IN THE BACK OF MY CAR THE POWER LIFTGATE FELL FULL-FORCE RIGHT ONTO MY HEAD AND PUSHED DOWN ONTO MY NECK (AND IT IS A VERY HEAVY LIFTGATE!). THANKFULLY I DID NOT PASS OUT. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED MY SERVICE GUY TO LET HIM KNOW WHAT HAD HAPPENED. I ALSO BROUGHT THE CAR IN TO THE DEALER THE VERY NEXT DAY. AFTER NOT FEELING WELL THE NIGHT BEFORE, I WENT URGENT CARE, WHO IN TURN SENT ME TO THE ER FOR A CT SCAN OF MY HEAD. I SUFFERED A CONCUSSION. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THE PROBLEM WITH THE LIFTGATE HAS BEEN SOLVED AND THINK IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION SINCE THERE WAS NO INDICATION OR SIGNS OF A FAILURE. I CONTACTED GM WHO HAS OPENED A CASE AND SAID THEY WILL BE CONTACTING ME. QUITE FRANKLY I WANT TO GET RID OF THE CAR BECAUSE OF THIS SITUATION. I THINK ALL ACADIA OWNERS SHOULD BE AWARE OF HOW SERIOUS IN FACT THIS ISSUES IS. I WAS TOT
