The 2004WORKHORSEW22 carries 107 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 0 crashes, 3 fires, 0 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.

Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 2004 W22 is service brakes, hydraulic with 64 filings, followed by service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:disc:caliper (7) and service brakes (6). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability. This model year has 2 active recall campaigns, which means the manufacturer is obligated to remedy the covered defect at no charge for the life of the vehicle — the full NHTSA campaign numbers are listed below.

NHTSA currently has 2 investigation files overlapping the 2004 W22. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. Use the related-complaint feed below to read raw owner narratives before deciding whether any pattern here affects your specific use case.

THE ABOVE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED ON 10/29/2010, WHILE CONDUCTING THE FIRST 30 DAY RIVING TEST, IT WAS NOTICED THAT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER WAS NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY, THE DISPLAY LIGHT WILL NOT COME ON AND THEREFORE HAD TO DRIVE IN THE EVENING WITHOUT THIS KNOWLEDGE. DURING THE DAILIGHT, WHEN I PLACED THE VEHICLE IN CRUISE CONTROL THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FAILED TO TELL ME SO. THERE ARE MANY OTHER FEATURES TO THIS INSTUMENT THAT I DO NOT KNOW IF THEY WORK OR NOT. UPON BRINGING THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE PURCHASING DEALER, I WAS TOLD THAT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY RECALLED BY THE MANUFACTURER AND THAT THE WORK HAD ALREADY BEEN COMPLETED ON APRIL 2010 AND THEREFORE IF I WANTED IT FIXED, I WOULD HAVE TO PAY APPROXIMATELY $600.00 TO GET IT FIXED. THIS VEHICLE WAS SOLD TO ME WHILE BEING UNSAFE TO DRIVE, HOW CAN THEY TELL ME THAT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR A SAFETY REPAIR OF THIS MAGNITUDE WHEN IT DID NOT HAPPEN WHILE I OWNED THE VEHICLE. THE WORKHORSE RECALL NUMBER WAS BULLETIN NO. 5
