19990809STEERING:LINKAGES

WHILE TRAVELING AT 65MPH ON AN EXPRESSWAY, I LOST TOTAL STEERING. THIS HAPPENED WITHOUT ANY PRIOR WARNING. MY STEERING WHEEL SPUN AS FREELY AS A ROULETTE WHEEL. TRUCK WENT TO THE RIGHT, BEARLY MISSING A BRIDGE OVERPASS. TRUCK WENT OFF THE ROAD AND DOWN AN EMBANKMENT AT A 45 DEGREE ANGLE. I THOUGHT THE TRUCK WAS ABOUT TO ROLL, BUT THEN THE TIRES TURNED RIGHT ANOTHER 45 DEGREES AND I ENDED UP AT THE BOTTOM THE THE DITCH, PERPENDICULAR TO IT. AMAZINGLY, NO DAMAGE TO TRUCK OR INJURY TO MY SELF. THE CAUSE TO DUE TO A BOLT LOCATED ABOVE THE BREAK PEDDEL ON THE STERRING COLUME COMMING LOOSE CAUSING THE LOWER PORTION TO DROP DOWN AND LEAVING THE UPPER PORTION OF THE STERRING COLUME TO SPIN FREELY. I CONSIDER MY SELF VERY FORTUNATE, (SOME ONE WAS DEFINETLY WATCHING OVER ME).

BUT THE FRONT BRAKES HAVE BEEN REPLACED TOO MANY TIMES FOR PREMATURE WEAR. VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN ONE REAR END COLLISION DUE TO BRAKE FAILURE. VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN/OUT OF DEALER'S SHOP NUMEROUS TIMES, AND THE PROBLEM CANNOT BE FOUND AND CORRECTED. CONSUMER IS REQUESTING AN INVESTIGATION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. *AK
