Within that volume, owners reported 1 crash, 0 fires, 0 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1984 COROLLA is seat belts:front:webbing with 1 filings, followed by seat belts:front:buckle assembly (1) and electrical system (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 3 investigation files overlapping the 1984 COROLLA. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. WE RECENTLY INSTALLED A CHILD SEAT IN THE LEFT BACK SEAT OF OUR TOYOTA COROLLA AND I NOTICED THAT THERE IS A TWIST IN THE BELT WHEN IT IS BUCKLED. BY COMPARING IT TO THE OTHER SEAT BELTS, I TRACED THE PROBLEM TO THE BUCKLE, WHICH WAS SITTING ON THE BELT IN A REVERSE POSITION. I TRIED TO REVERSE THE BUCKLE BY FOLDING THE SEAT BELT STRAP IN THE SLOT. HOWEVER, THE SLOT WIDTH IS ONLY NARROW ENOUGH TO ALLOW A SINGLE SEAT BELT STRAP TO BE THREADED THROUGH IT. I THEREFORE CONCLUDED THAT IT WAS INSTALLED IN THIS POSITION AT THE FACTORY. I REQUESTED OUR TOYOTA DEALER FIX IT WITHOUT CHARGE AND WAS TOLD THAT SINCE THE CAR WAS 10 YEARS OLD THEY HAD NO WAY OF KNOWING WHETHER IT WAS MANUFACTURED THAT WAY OR WE WERE RESPONSIBLE. WE REQUESTED THAT AN APPOINTMENT BE SET UP FOR US WITH THE TOYOTA REGIONAL MANAGER TO INSPECT IT. OUR PHONE CALLS HAVE NOT BEEN RETURNED. SINCE WE WERE ASKING FOR ONE SEAT BELT BUCKLE TO BE REPAIRED I ALSO REQUESTED THAT THE SECOND SHOULDER BELT ON THE BACK SEAT BE RETRACT
