ON 6/13/2012 I WAS DRIVING MY 2008 BURGMAN AN650 AT APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH IN NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS ON A PAVED HIGHWAY WHEN THE SCOOTER SUDDENLY LOST MOMENTUM YET THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO OPERATE NORMALLY. UPON CLOSURE EXAMINATION, IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE SCOOTER WOULD REQUIRE SERVICING. HAD TRAFFIC CONDITIONS BEEN HEAVIER, THE INCIDENT COULD HAVE PROVEN TO BE FATAL. ON 6/20/2012 I WROTE SUZUKI CORP TO INFORM THEM OF THE PROBLEM IN DETAIL. IN A RESPONSE DATED 7/25/2012, SUZUKI MADE IT CLEAR THEY WILL NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. A MECHANICAL INSPECTION PERFORMED BY THE BY THE DEALER I PURCHASED THE SCOOTER FROM HAS ADVISED THAT THE ACTUATOR GEARS HAD FAILED AND WILL COST ABOUT $1,800 TO REPAIR. THE SCOOTER IS CURRENTLY IN THE SHOP PENDING DETERMINATION OF ITS FATE. THE BIKE HAS LESS THAN 17,500 MILES. IN MY OPINION THESE SCOOTERS SHOULD BE RECALLED. *TR *JS
