The 1999SATURNCOUPE carries 3 consumer safety complaints in NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation database for this specific model-year cohort. Within that volume, owners reported 1 crash, 0 fires, 0 injuries, and 0 fatalities. No NCAP 5-star crash-test rating is available for this model year in the federal database.
Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1999 COUPE is air bags:frontal with 1 filings, followed by engine and engine cooling:engine (1) and vehicle speed control (1). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.
NHTSA currently has 14 investigation files overlapping the 1999 COUPE. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THE ENGINE OF MY WIFE'S SATURN [XXX] HAS CONTINUED TO RUN AT AN ELEVATED SPEED WHEN THE ACCELERATOR IS RELEASED. THEN WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS PRESSED THE ENTIRE CAR SHAKES. IF THE TRANSMISSION IS SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL THE RPMS DROP, BUT WHEN IT IS PUT BACK INTO DRIVE THE RPMS INCREASE AND WHEN THE BRAKE IS PRESSED THE VIBRATIONS RESUME. EVENTUALLY THE SITUATION CLEARS. AFTER THE FIRST INCIDENT WE TOOK THE CAR INTO THE LOCAL SATURN DEALER WHO REPORTED THAT THERE WERE NO COMPUTER CODES SO THEY COULDN'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. THE FIRST TIME MY WIFE TOLD ME ABOUT ONE WAS IN JANUARY THIS YEAR. WE HAVE HAD PERHAPS A DOZEN SINCE THEN. THE INCIDENTS VARY IN SEVERITY. THE FIRST ONE MY WIFE REPORTED WAS QUITE FRIGHTENING. I EXPERIENCED A SIMILAR INCIDENT THIS MORNING.*AK *JS INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

SATURN'S HAVE A LOW AIR INTAKE (WE WERE TOLD THIS BY OTHER MECHANICS) WHICH IS WHY OUR ENGINE FLOODED SO EASILY. *AK
