Component-level analysis is where model-year complaints become actionable: the top complaint category for the 1992 MIRAGE is seat belts with 4 filings, followed by seat belts:front:retractor (3) and engine and engine cooling:engine:gasoline (2). Concentration in one or two component groups is the classic signature of a systemic defect; a flat distribution usually reflects normal aging, warranty complaints, or isolated build-plant variability.

NHTSA currently has 14 investigation files overlapping the 1992 MIRAGE. Owners comparing this cohort against neighboring years should pair the counters above with the complaint-by-year trend on the parent model page — a spike in a single year often tracks to a platform refresh, a new transmission supplier, or an updated ECU calibration. WE ARE HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE DRIVERS SIDE AUTOMATIC SAFETY HARNESS. IT WAS NOT WORKING WHEN WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE USED ABOUT A YEAR AGO. I CHECKED ON THE WEB AND FOUND THE FOLLOWING RECALL: 97V063001 THAT IS LISTED AS A RECALL FOR WHAT LOOKS LIKE OUR PROBLEM. I CALLED A LOCAL DEALER AND THEY DID NOT FIND ANY RECALL ON OUR CAR, A 1992 MITSUBISHI MIRAGE LS, VIN NUMBER: [XXX] . THE REFERENCED NUMBER ABOVE LOOKS LIKE A RECALL TO ME. I WENT AND TESTED THE SWITCH MYSELF AND FOUND THE SWITCH DID NOT WORK ELECTRICALLY. WHEN I UNPLUGGED THE SWITCH AND MANUALLY SHORTED THE CONNECTORS THE SAFETY HARNESS WILL GO BACK AND FORTH. THIS TELLS ME THAT THE PROBLEM LISTED IS THE CORRECT PROBLEM. WE NEED THIS FIXED AND I FEEL IT IS A MANUFACTURERS DEFECT WITH A RECALL NOT NOTED BY THE LOCAL DEALER. HOW DO I GET IT FIXED BY THE MANUFACTURER? *NM UPDATED 07/17/2012 *JS INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
