Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2004-2006 B-Series vehicles that received replacement front passenger air bag inflators under a previous recall. The replacement front passenger air bag inflators may have been installed incorrectly.
The contact owns a 2005 Mazda B-Series ZJ57. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Numbers: 17V806000, 17V807000, and 23V837000 (Air Bags) however, the dealer had refused to complete the recall due to the air bags that had inflated during a crash. The contact stated that the manufacturer refused to honor the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had experienced a failure. The contact stated while driving at approximately 20 MPH and as he was turning to the left, he did not observe that another vehicle was crossing his path. The contact stated that his front driver's side bumper, headlight, and grill crashed into the front passenger door of the vehicle. The contact stated that the driver's side and passenger front air bags deployed. The contact stated that the driver's side air bag inflator exploded and that he was cut on his right cheek by metal fragments. TAKATA RECALL - MAZDA RECALL NUMBER 9116A, NHTSA RECALL NUMBER 16V-048 I WAS INFORMED BY LETTER ABOUT THIS RECALL WELL OVER A YEAR AGO, BUT THE STATUS STILL REMAINS "RECALL INCOMPLETE, REMEDY NOT YET AVAILABLE". MY DEALERSHIP CANNOT ADVISE IF OR WHEN PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE. I AM VERY CONCERNED BECAUSE IT WAS A MAZDA B2300 SERIES PICKUP A YEAR NEWER THAN MINE WHICH BLEW UP AND KILLED A PERSON, INITIATING THIS RECALL OF BOTH MAZDA AND FORD RANGER BRANDED MAZDA PICKUPS. THE FAILURE RATE OF THESE INFLATORS INCREASES RAPIDLY WITH VEHICLE AGE.

TAKATA RECALL. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL MAZDA DEALER SHORTLY AFTER BEING NOTIFIED OF THE JANUARY 29, 2016 RECALL 9116A (NHTSA RECALL NUMBER 16V-048). THEY INFORMED ME THEY WOULD BEGIN REPLACING THE DEFECTIVE AIR BAGS DURING THE MARCH TO JUNE 2016 TIME FRAME. TO DATE I HAVE NOT BEEN CONTACTED BY MAZDA TO BRING MY VEHICLE IN FOR THE REPLACEMENT.
